Planting
a Tree
Planting the tree
There are several different types of trees that can be purchased B & B, container plants and bare root stock. Each type will very in the way they can be planted.
Digging the hole-The hole should be no deeper
than the soil that the tree is from. The hole should be at least three
times
wider than the soil of the tree is from. The soil on the sides of the hole
should be roughed up or or holes poked
in it to allow for root expansion
and
proper water filtration for the roots.
Placing the tree in the hole-B&B
should be placed in the hole and the burlapped needs to be removed
completely or at least from the top of the root ball. The string and metal
cage should be removed completely. Then place in the hole. Containerized
trees should be removed from the container in which they came. Then
check
the roots to see if they are root bound. If they are gently tear away the
roots from the bottom and sides. This will allow for proper root expansion.
Then place in the hole.Bareroots have no soil with them so
you must be careful. First build a small mound in the middle of the hole.
Then place the tree in the hole spreading the roots around the mound to ensure
proper root expansion.
Filling the hole back in-Making sure the tree is still properly aligned so that the top of the roots and the beggining of the trunk are level with the top of the hole. Start filling the hole back in with the soil that was removed and a combination of fertilzer. Once filled to the top lightly tamp the soil with your hands cause your feet or any other device can cause the soil around the roots to become to compact. Next build the soil up around the tree of about 1 to 2 inches making a trough to allow for watering.
Mulching and staking the tree-After making the
trough place your mulch on top of the tree to dress up the area
and
help retain water.Stake the tree if necessary. Some larger trees
do not need to be staked
but smaller caliper sized trees will have to be staked to prevent
the wind or other enviromental circumstances from damaging the trees
proper growth.
If you do stake the stake should only be on for as long as the tree
is unable to stand on its own which sometimes can take a year. Make
sure the stake is
not on to tight but yet the tree should be allowed to sway in the
wind. Last make sure the stake are driven sturdy into the ground
at least a foot.
Watering-watering the tree should be done after the first four steps are done. When watering you should water the tree after planting and then once a week for at lest yeardepending on rain fall amounts. It is better to water less frequent and deeply than to water frequent and less deep.
